Located along six miles of Pacific coastline between Cardiff by the Sea and La Costa (Carlsbad), Encinitas has an approximate population of 60,000. The natural environment offers magnificent beaches, cliffs, flat-topped coastal areas, steep mesa bluffs and rolling hills. The Quail Botanical Gardens is a beautiful oasis to visit offering an Amazon Rainforest exhibit and the largest display of bamboo in the world. The gardens of the Self Realization Center sit overlooking the ocean in a serene garden-like setting. You will also find Encinitas Ranch Golf Course, a championship 18 hole, par 72 course with panoramic ocean views.

The surfing is unbeatable and many surf contests are held here. Top billing goes to the Switchfoot Bro-Am surfing contest held every year. As many as 6,000 fanatical surf fans congregate yearly at Moonlight beach to see this highly sponsored event.

Big Jim’s Old South BBQ, owned by Jim Wade, a man with 30 years of experience cooking southern barbeque, is one of the best places to eat in Encinitas. Big Jim’s Old South BBQ is famous for its huge pork ribs and whole chickens which are smoked only over hickory wood and charcoal in the smoker for an authentic southern flavor. You can choose between a variety of side dishes including sweet potato, french fries, mashed potato fries, and pork baked beans.

Driving down highway 101 you will find Swamis Cafe, a restaurant well known for its variety of American food and vegetarian dishes. French toast, burritos, smoothies, sandwiches, and soups are a few items you will find on the menu. By the way, breakfast or lunch sitting at one of the few tables inside or one of the many tables outside will only cost you $3-$7!

For music aficionados, Lou’s Records is the place for you. Lou’s has current and historic vinyl records that you thought you would never see again. It’s one of the few places throughout San Diego where you can browse collectible and current vinyl in a single location. Can’t find what you want? They’ll help you find a certain gem you may be missing.
