Four Things You Didn’t Know About San Diego

New to the San Diego area? We uncovered a few secrets about this beautiful Southern California city that you may have never heard about. Besides the most near-perfect climate year-round anywhere in the United States, San Diego is known for several other important firsts that you may never have heard of, including:

1. It is California’s birthplace. When European explorers first ventured to the West Coast of our country, a Portuguese navigator named Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed over from Spain and landed on September 28, 1542 on the shore of what is now San Diego.

2. When the scenic landmark bridge, known as the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, opened back in 1969, a very famous person was the very first to drive over it. Who was that person? It was none other than the “Gipper” himself, Ronald Reagan.

3. There are almost 7,000 farms in San Diego County, which is the most in the U.S. The county also ranks number one in our nation for the overall value of its sod, greenhouse, nursery and floriculture products. In addition, the county is the producer of more avocados than any other region in the United States.

4. If you haven’t ever been to the picturesque and majestic Hotel Del Coronado, you’ve been missing a real treat. The world’s very first outdoor Christmas tree that was lighted electrically was unveiled at the resort way back in 1904. The hotel has also hosted ten U.S. presidents, and the first state dinner ever to be hosted outside of the White House was held there in 1970.
